Obama picks former Clinton Chief of Staff Panetta to head CIA

January 5, 2009

What?

Now this makes absolutely no sense to me.

I am looking at Leon Panetta‘s record and from everything he’s done in the past, you could have argued for any variety of positions for him, but CIA?

Panetta’s background is in civil rights and budget work.  He switched from the Republican to the Democratic party and became a nine-term Congressman, working mostly on domestic issues.

Under Clinton, he worked toward creating the balanced budget.

The highest level of qualification that I’m seeing for him as a CIA head is that he was a “Member of the President’s Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies.”

Most of Obama’s Cabinet appointments have made immediate sense.  Unless Obama is strictly concerned with limiting the CIA’s budget (which seems to be a strange sole focus to have at this time), I am going to have to wait to understand the decision of this appointment.

Chill Out on Dubious Dubai’s First Refrigerated Beach

December 16, 2008

Since I’m apparently on an environmental kick today…

“Dubai is like a bubble world where the things that are worrying the rest of the world, like climate change, are simply ignored so that people can continue their destructive lifestyles.”

Best quotes from this article:

Student: “Yang Yang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him. I didn’t expect he would attack.”

Park employee:   “We cannot make it like a prison. We already have signs up warning people not to climb in,” he said. “There are no fences along roads but people know not to cross if there are cars. This is basic knowledge.”

Indians put their flag on the moon – in a million pieces

November 16, 2008

Awww, the poor Indians.

But while the celebrations conjured up images akin to that of the U.S. flag unfurled on the moon by Apollo astronauts, India’s flag is most likely scattered over a wide swath of the moon’s Shackleton crater after the probe slammed into the surface at more than 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) per hour.
